Apple is once again in talks with Sam Altman's OpenAI to use the company's generative AI technology to bring several new features to the iPhone later this year. Apple and OpenAI are discussing a possible agreement on how to integrate AI startup features into the upcoming iOS 18 operating system, Bloomberg reports. The talks represent a resumption of dialogue between the two companies. Earlier this year, Apple, led by Tim Cook, entered into negotiations with OpenAI, but the work between the two parties was minimal. In addition to this, Apple is also in talks with his Google, owned by Alphabet Inc, about licensing the Gemini chatbot. Also read: Apple dethrones Samsung to become world's top mobile phone maker

According to reports, Apple has not made a final decision on which partners to use, and there is no guarantee that a deal will be reached. Apple could reach an agreement with both OpenAI and Google, or choose another provider entirely. The next iPhone operating system, iOS 18, is believed to include several new features based on Apple's internal large-scale language model, an AI software that can generate text with human-like speech. But the Cupertino-based tech giant is looking for partners to power features like chatbots similar to OpenAI's ChatGPT. The development comes a month and a half ahead of Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, which will announce new AI software and services. The company also plans to tout features that are more seamlessly integrated into its devices and offer more privacy protection than competing AI products, Bloomberg reported.

Last year, Tim Cook said he personally uses OpenAI's ChatGPT, but said there are “some issues that need to be worked out.” He promised that new AI capabilities will be introduced to Apple's platforms on a “very thoughtful basis.”
Relying on partners could help accelerate Apple's chatbot efforts and avoid some risks. By outsourcing its generative AI capabilities to another company, Cook could potentially reduce its liability for its own platform.
