Traveling is a privilege and favorite hobby for many, but it rarely goes perfectly smoothly.
Jen Maki of Divine Destinations isn't expecting a very smooth summer.
“Things never seem to go smoothly in this industry. I'm not kidding,” she said. “However, there are rumors of a strike within the airline this summer. And unfortunately, it looks like it will end by the Fourth of July weekend.”
In the Midwest, more people drive than fly. However, due to a shortage of pilots, the number of crew members available is limited.
“If you don't have a crew that can fly safely, you're not going anywhere. And that's the problem. There's something called crew timeout. And it's basically a way to keep airline employees from being overworked.” Labor laws stipulated in the Act,” Maki said. “And unfortunately, once the crew is timed out, there’s nowhere to go.”
Maki said to try to relax as much as possible when you get a call that your flight is delayed.
“The airlines are very good. It's legally their job and it's their responsibility to make sure you get to your final destination. And if you miss your connection because of their delays… If so, it’s whether they try to put you on another flight,” she said.
Maki recommends booking a direct flight if possible. On the other hand, the cancellation is definitely disappointing.
“Perhaps all is not lost, because even if flight number one is cancelled, they are going to rebook on the next available flight,” Maki said. “But you also have the right to say, 'Forget it.' Give me your money back.”
There is a “short list” of reasons why an airline may owe compensation to a traveler for a flight cancellation or delay. Weather is not one of them.
“If it's the airline's fault in any way, shape, or form, such as a crew member taking a timeout, not showing up, or having a mechanical issue, then yes, that means the airline is obligated to compensate you.” “Yes, and I've seen it come in the form of vouchers for meals at the airport. I've seen it come with free hotel nights,” she said. Ta. “But remember, at the end of the day, they don't have to do anything other than make sure you arrive at your final destination as originally booked.”
